Horizon Trigger features a streamlined ruleset, designed to evoke the feeling of your favorite FPS experiences while being intuitive to learn at the table and engaging when you play with it!
We’ve worked hard to develop rules that flow when they hit the table, while rewarding the tactical nature of action oriented science shooter genre games! Mechanics like respawn, cooldown, load-outs, and more all feature in Horizon Trigger, along with puzzles, challenges, obstacles, and more!

Here’s a really brief overview of how the tabletop game works!
To accomplish a task, overcome an obstacle, or impose your will on a situation, you have to succeed in a test. To accomplish a test, you roll a die as determined by your Attribute (d12, d10, or d8).
That roll’s result has to equal or exceed a result of 4 after all bonuses and penalties are applied.
Die result >= 4 to be successful.
As long as you’ve equaled or exceeded a result of 4, you have accomplished your stated task.
If you are under the result of 4, you can push the die, rerolling and hoping you can make it.
- When you push, you can reroll any or all dice associated with that action, as you see fit.
If you are then successful after the push reroll, you are successful with a consequence, a setback or negative addition to your success.
If you fail the push reroll, you suffer a failure, and the Consul will tell you what happens. They will introduce a consequence, something that dramatically alters and changes the story.

In Horizon Trigger, the equipment you use matters! Gear might have qualities, special powers, or unique ways to bend the rules of the game, but most importantly, gear has rarity.
Every piece of gear you find (Armor, Weapons, Artifacts, or others) has a rating, represented by a die size. The die size of the gear is determined by rarity of the equipment:
- Common equipment has a rating of d4.
- Uncommon equipment has a rating of d6.
- Rare equipment has a rating of d8.
- Majestic equipment has a rating of d10.
- Legendary equipment has a rating of d12.
